what you missed from the last week

The triple murder trial of Chad Daybell continued this week with more of his family taking the stand.

Monday started with a difficult testimony for jurors who were shown photos of where and how JJ and Tylee's remains were found on Chad Daybell's property. The photos were not shown to the public. FBI Special Agent Steve Daniels showed jurors photos from where the bodies of both children were found, including a firepit that contained Tylees' remains.

Melani Palowski, Lori Vallow Daybell's niece, took the stand. She testifies that Chad was responsible for labeling JJ and Tylee as "dark," and being possessed by dark spirits.

Ian Palowski, Melani's now ex-husband, also testified. Palowski became increasingly suspicious of Chad and Lori after learning that JJ and Tylee were missing, and neither of them was helping find them with the police. Palowski eventually agreed to record phone calls between him and his then-wife Melani, Chad, and Lori. Several snippets from those recorded phone calls were played for jurors as Ian explained the ever-changing rules of how Chad and Lori seemed to see the world. At one point in a recorded call, Chad and Lori explained how they felt like several of the Rexburg Police Detectives investigating them were "dark," a reference to their belief that dark or evil spirits possessed someone. Several people whom Chad and Lori called "dark," died, including JJ, Tylee, Tammy, and Charles Vallow.

Zulema Pastenes, a former friend of Chad and Lori Daybell's also testified this week. Zulema talked about the strange and ever-changing rules that make up Chad's belief system, including how some people can be labeled as "dark," or possessed by dark spirits. Zulema told prosecutors that Chad had told her that JJ was going to die young but that he would return to Earth as Colby Ryan's son. Chad told Zulema that he was able to do this because he had access to the "Book of Life," and was able to see someone's past, present, and future.

Samantha Gwilliam, Tammy Daybell's sister, was called to testify on Friday. Gwilliam is the latest in a string of relatives who have been called to testify in the triple murder trial. Gwilliam testified that she was shocked and devastated to receive the news of Tammy's sudden death, stating that Tammy was in good health and was very physically active.

Gwilliam also testified that the last time she saw her sister alive, Tammy had surprised her with a birthday present she delivered to her home. Chad remained in the car while Tammy delivered the present. Gwilliam says that she noticed their relationship seemed to have become very strained and increasingly more distant before Tsammy's death. Gwilliam says that she was shocked and found it very strange when Chad requested that his name not be mentioned anywhere on Tammy's headstone, and then when he had Tammy buried in Utah, nowhere near Chad or their children.

The trial continues on Monday, CBS2 will have updates for you as the trial moves forward.
