In Season 10, Episode 11 (“The Blind Side”), Griffin discovers that Lois Griffin has replaced their rotting staircase with a newer, more slippery model. He makes this discovery too late in what has been described as the most aggressive tumble of all time. When he finally reaches the ground floor, he is splayed out with his back to the camera, a bent leg and both arms behind his back.

The visual is bizarre and memorable, which perfectly describes the pain Griffin endured. This explains why the Death Pose became a meme that still resonates to this day.

In June 2012, a clip of the scene was uploaded on YouTube which gained over five million views. Over the years, the scene became subjected to several edits to recreate it as a meme. The pose also became popular among games. Catalogued by Know Your Meme, there are multiple screenshots of characters from games like Team Fortress 2, a multiplayer first-person shooter, lying on the ground in a decent approximation of the pose.

Video game websites are not the only platforms snapping up the Death Pose meme. Animation studios dedicated to TV shows and movies like Netflix’s The Cuphead Show, which is an adaptation of a video game property, adopted the pose too. Here, the main character, Elder Kettle (Joe Hanna), takes the pose a step further by becoming a horrific spider monster.
