Boise State's Webb III declares for NBA Draft
Boise State's men's basketball team could look a lot different next season.
With the departure of a senior class that included second all-time leading scorer Anthony Drmic, two other Bronco cogs could be on the way out.
Boise State confirmed reports that redshirt junior James Webb III will declare for the 2016 NBA Draft.
"I talked to family, friends and the people who have been close to me through this whole process and decided this was the best step for me," Webb III said, through a written statement. "This new rule is meant for people like me to test the waters. I feel good about myself, where I stand and how much I can still progress."
Under a new rule adopted by the NCAA Division I Joint Council earlier this year, men's basketball student-athletes have until 10 days after the conclusion of the NBA Draft Combine to withdraw their name from the NBA Draft, provided they do not hire representation.
"If my workouts go well and I get the feedback I want, I will consider hiring an agent at that point," Webb said. "That's still a ways down the road though and I'm just focused on continuing to get better and put myself in the best position possible."
This past season the first team All-Mountain West selection averaged 15.8 points and 9.1 rebounds for the Broncos.
The news was first reported by Shams Charania of The Vertical and Yahoo! Sports.
Also on Sunday, the Idaho Statesman reported head coach Leon Rice interviewed for the head coaching vacancy at Saint Louis University.
The Bilikens fired head coach Jim Crews earlier in March. Crews went 77-56 in four seasons at SLU but was just 22-42 in the past two years.
Rice is 122-75 in six seasons at Boise State. Boise State went 20-12 (11-7 MWC) this past season. Rice has led the Broncos to four straight seasons of at least 20 wins.
