The Mercury Music Prize is awarded to a British or Irish artist/band whom a panel of judges, composed of journalists and music academics feel is the most worthy, with the winner assured of a place on many a coffee table and a £20,000 cash prize ($28,564). The selection is made from albums released between August 2000 and July 2001.

Previous winners include Pulp, Roni Size/Reprazent, M People, Gomez, Talvin Singh and, last year's winner, Badly Drawn Boy's The Hour Of Bewilderbeast.

Gorillaz, whose members include Blur's Damon Albarn, have told the panel that they can "shove" their award and describe the nomination as like "carrying a dead albatross round your neck for eternity."
